Keane: Somewhere only we know

Keane are an English alternative rock band from Battle, East Sussex, formed in 1997. The group currently comprises Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, backing vocals), Tom Chaplin (lead vocals, guitar) and Richard Hughes (drums, percussion).

Keane achieved mainstream success with the release of their debutalbum, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. The album won multiple awards and was the second best-selling British album of the year. Their second studio album, Under the Iron Sea, continued the band’s success, topping the album charts in the UK and debuting at number-four on the Billboard 200 chart. Their third album, Perfect Symmetry, was released in October 2008. Their fourth record, Night Train, was released in May 2010.

Keane are known for using a piano as the lead instrument instead of guitars, differentiating them from most other rock bands. Since the start of their career, the band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide.

A very good example of a «Lip Dub»

Have you ever heard about a lip dub? A lip dub is a type of video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video. It is made by filming individuals or a group of people moving their lips as if they were singing the song while listening to it or any recorded audio, then dubbing over it in post editing with the original audio of the song. It also has to be shot in one scene, without any cuts in it.

They have become popular with the advent of mass participatory video content sites like YouTube. I have known about the one I post here thanks to Javier Aragón, an English teacher from IES Itálica, Santiponce, Seville. I saw it on his blog and I thought we could see it in mine, as well. The song is called The Blues are still Blue and the group is The Belle and Sebastian. And the people who did it were teachers and students from Colegio Huerta de Santa Ana, in Gines, Seville. Special mention to Carlos Trujillo, the English teacher who organised the making of it. Have a look at it and enjoy!

John Lennon’s week: Woman

«Woman» is a song written and performed by John Lennon from his 1980 album Double Fantasy. Written by Lennon, it is an ode to his wife Yoko Ono, which is introduced by Lennon whispering, «For the other half of the sky …», a paraphrase of a Chinese proverb. With subtitles in Spanish.

U2 week: Beautiful day

It’s really a beautiful day… Seventeen years ago (seventeen!!) I started working in Lepe. The same day my niece Ana was born, it was such a coincidence. So I want to congratulate her on her seventeenth birthday with this song, which is a shot of optimism and hope. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANA!

U2 week: Pride (In the name of love)

This song was written by Bono about Martin Luther King Jr. It is acknowledged as one of the best of the Irish band career. Originally composed twenty-six years ago, it has remained as one of the official hymns of the band.

U2 week: The sweetest thing

I had the opportunity of watching U2’s concert in Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the summer of 2009. It was an amazing gig, one of the best I can remember. They call it «the 360º World Tour», it crossed the ocean and went on the road in the States and Canada and now they are back in Europe to finish it in style, here, in Spain. They will be in Seville next Thursday after performing in San Sebastián as well, so it´ll be nice to review some of the videos of the Irish group throughout the week. Here comes the first.

The song was reportedly written by Bono as an apology to his wife Ali Hewson for having to work in the studio on her birthday during The Joshua Tree record sessions. Click next to get the lyrics: U2 the sweetest thing
